KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE R // 22,000 km Owner's Review
The 2022 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R is my third 1290 Super Adventure from KTM and in this video I will talk about the changes that were made on the latest itereation of KTMs flagship adventure motorcycle that actual made a difference for my kind of riding.
After 100,000 km of riding KTM's flagship 1290 Super Adventure I experience my first technical issue and it was a major issue!
I have made a range of videos on my former KTM motorcycles that may be interesting or relevant in this context.

      Thank you very much- I am curious about the 1390 as well - I expect to see it at EICMA this year. I am afraid that the weight will go up (again). I am also curious about the new KTM 990 Adventure R - there are early spy shots on this one but it’s not expected to be released before 2025 - I like the more rally inspired look but same as for the 1390 the weight will be interesting

    I have the same model. Fantastic bike love it. Just had warped front rotors and pads replaced under warranty at 10000km. Problem occurred approximately 4000km Brembo brakes so don’t know why. Rode my 1250 pretty hard with Brembo with no issues. Also had coolant leak. Topped up twice so far. Been checked apparently no issues?? Only other issue is bike falls over sometimes. 😢

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes 8 годин тому

      Thanks for sharing your experience- the warped rotors are an issue than some had on the predecessors too. Coolant should not leak - maybe check the seal around the water pump - Stephan had this issue on his rental bikes - an easy fix with a new seal and something KTM should do under warranty. As for the falling over part - practice and off-road trainings help to minimize those - my current bike sees a lot less ground time than my first 1290 SAS that had to endure my learning curve 😂

    I was wondering. I have a 2023 Ktm 1290 sar with 570 miles. When I fill it with gas it seems to take a few seconds for the fuel to trickle down so I can’t hold the nozzle filling as it doesn’t go down as fast as it pumps in. Is that something you have experienced or do you think I could have something blocked?

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes 14 годин тому

      Every time I fuel up 😉 it’s normal as the fuel level rises I have to pull the nozzle up a bit and slow down the flow to allow the time for both tank halfs to fill up

    Well, it´s a KTM, and the quality is near the bottom of all brands, even if it´s gotten a bit better since the 950/990 and the disaster 790. Allways sell a KTM when the warranty runs out. I kept my 2020 SDR a bit to long, but only suffered a water damaged display, and rusted nuts, mostly bacause the 5 recalls had fixed some of the faults before this. I did not trade it for a SDR 1390...

      At least KTM now extends the warranty at no additional costs on 2024 models if you keep to the regular maintenance schedule- I extended my warranty on this bike for peace of mine but I had to pay for it on the 2022 model

    KTM is puts out a bad product. I had a 2019 KTM 790 Adventure that I sold at 16,000 miles. Shortly after that the person that purchased the bike from me had the engine fail when he was in Mexico. There was camshaft lobe wear and a total piston failure. I felt very bad about this since I had all the maintenance per schedule performed by a KTM dealer. The engine issues I had with the bike was a leaking countershaft seal and a leaking water pump, both of which were fixed under warranty.

    In the bike business 20 years and raced before that. In my experience RK HD O-ring chain, stretches least and lasts longest! Just installed RK PREMIUM GOLD ROADRACEING CHAIN! Why trust a company ,famous for shaft drive bikes, to design a chain? Use chain wax...wont fly off!

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes 8 годин тому

      The chain was designed by Regina - they make chains. Chain wax is no good for dusty environments like off-road riding so I was curious to give this „innovation“ a try. I am going standard high quality chains from now on 😉

    I have a Regina Endurance chain on my Kawasaki Ninja 1000sx and it’s getting changed next week after over 30 000 kms. I find it’s a good performance, I ride all year long, all kind of roads, even some gravel and sand, no oiler. I’ve never bought the claim that it was maintenance free, I treated it pretty much like I would care any other regular chain. For me the mileage is a bigger aspect than the maintenance and in this regard I consider it a very good chain, my mechanic at the dealers’ (who by the way didn’t sell it to me, he never even had heard about it) also was very surprised by how the chain has lasted. Regards

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes 8 годин тому

      With regular maintenance any high quality chain should get you this mileage - the Regina endurance chain is more than twice the price of a top of the line „standard“ chain“ not sure where the extra value is?! Or what is your experience with standard chains and mileage?

    • @carlosalonso9866
      @carlosalonso9866 7 годин тому

      @@MotoVibes I don't have a lot of experience with chains as I come from two shaft driven motorcycles. I base my opinion mainly on what the mechanics at my dealer tell me. They have a lot of experience with chains and they didn't know the Regina Endurance, I had it ordered and they put it on for me. It's a small dealership so basically there are two mechanics and the boss and they told me that they found the chain expensive but that it was outstanding in its performance. I don't do off-roading as you do but have done the odd sand or gravel road, ride all-year long with rain and salty roads so the chain on my bike takes a beating. I'm not biased towards any manufacturer. If there's a chain with the same performance but a smaller price, I'll take it. Regards

    Hi everyone, I own a SADR 1290 year 2021, it currently has around 60k km. As soon as I picked it up I had clutch problems, under warranty they changed the clutch pipes and pump, the TFT broke/cracks, changed under warranty. finally, a problem with the TC light was never resolved, I kept the bike at the dealership for over a month without understanding the problem. Currently the problem has no longer arisen, let's hope for the best. I forgot while driving I broke the transmission chain, luckily without any problems, due to a defect in the chain at around 30K, a problem not recognised. Indeed the warranty, but above all the assistance leaves a lot to be desired.👋👋💪

    • @ralphcantrell3214

      Very true! Modern O-ring- sealed chains are permanently lubed from the factory. All the lube they will ever have is already in them, and there is nothing you can ever do to replace it or add more. All you can do is lube the interface between the rollers and the sprocket teeth, and between the plates and the seals. It is debatable whether either of these interfaces even need regular lube. Still, If you maintained a chain according to manufacturers recommendations, you would hardly have time to ride. I do very little chain maintenance, save for necessary adjustments and a bit of spray lube here and there. I just don't worry too much about it, and instead accept that I will be changing chains and sprockets here and there whether I do this all the time or not. I've ridden by this chain philosophy for over 50 years, and am currently on motorcycle number 40 or so. Both of my current bikes have around 25K miles on their original chains, and are still going strong, and I haven't had to knock myself out maintaining them. That's good enough for me. When those chains and sprockets need to be replaced, I'll do it with a smile. NOW... all bets are off with non-O-ring race chains. These definitely do have to be meticulously, cleaned, lubed and adjusted all the time.

    from 2021 to 2022 i had a KTM 790 duke. It already had 2 years and 10.000km aprox. it came with it's software malfunctioning, after a guarantee covered service it ran smoothly. but then it started sweating oil from every single gasket. I made 14.000km with it and sold it before I ran out of guarantee. really sporty and funny but also full of reliability issues. nowadays I have a Suzuki gsr 600 with no issues

    I cannot stress out enough the benefits of having the manual in digital form. Search function, going back and forth between the different steps, zooming in on pictures to see precisely what's what. And also, a tablet/keyboard can be wiped off while paper will just stain. And while I'm not a very big fan of advanced tech, having in the future some "AI" (or neural network to be more precise ) to help with the repair in combination with a proper set of AR glasses would allow anybdy to fix their bikes/cars. But I guess that'll make us a bit dumber :))

    Is this what Regina claims? Is that genuinely how they market the chain?? What mileage do they accept as “normal life”? As an engineer, I’d have to say this has got to be bollocks unless they define the durability as something really low like 10k miles… If they make the chain so robust that it can survive without any lubrication, the sprockets would wear out pretty quickly. If you don’t want to do chain maintenance, buy a bike with shaft drive FFS.

    hallo, Ich folge dir und liebe deine Straßenvideos, auch mit KTM-Bezug. Ich würde gerne wissen, ob es möglich ist, die Federung der KTM der vorherigen Generation so weich einzustellen, dass man zu zweit auf teren und Schotter fahren kann. grussse Jurij

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes 5 днів тому

      Die Federung erlaubt eine rechte gute Bandbreite von weich bis hart - bei der S mit dem Semi aktiven Fahrwerk ja sehr einfach auf Knopfdruck - die Federvorspannung muss bei 2 Personen Betrieb erhöht werden - geht aber auch Knopfdruck bei der S. Für einfache Schotterwege bzw. schlechten Straßenbelag sollte das gehen. Die R hat das deutliche bessere Fahrwerk und auch mehr Federweg aber alle Einstellmöglichkeiten sind manuell zu machen. Das dauert länger aber gibt dann mehr Möglichkeiten- hoffe das hilft ein bisschen 😉

    My KTM 1290 engine was broke within a year when I was on a trip to Austria (I come from Netherlands). I ended up 20 KM away from the KTM factory, and I needed to wait more then 2 hours for the Mobility Service (hell focking long) and they took me to KTM Salzburg. KTM Salzburg helped me friendly on Friday late afternoon but could not fix it in a few days, because the I would go home on the next Monday I took my KTM back to the Netherlands back in a van (we were in Austria with 30 motorcycles and we had a Van with us for luggage). I could not get a rent/service KTM for free so my trip was over.... When I was back in the Netherlands I took the KTM to my local dealer and they would fix it within de warranty, but it would take some time. I still could not get a rent/service bike for free from KTM/Dealer, I needed to rent one by my self (but thats way to expensive for a warranty case...), and it was July, so in the middle of the motor season...... I complained at social media about it and after a few hours I got a message from KTM Netherlands and they gave me a KTM within a day for free to use when my own KTM got repaired (+1 for KTM Netherlands).... It took more then 12 weeks that my own KTM was repaired and I got allot of issues with my local dealer because they were lying alot agains me. They said they were working on my KTM, but they didn't, every week when I came by it stands in the same corner in the same state (they didn't gave me updates or some thing)... I was furious, because my KTM ended up every time in de back of the line... Finally after 12 weeks they repaired my KTM, I was happy. But later I had issues again with my local KTM dealer because they didn't replace the oil and oil filters during the 30,000 km service even I paid for a full 30.000 km service (KTM dealer is expensive, and because warranty you need to go to the KTM dealer)... On the 40.000 service that I did on my own I found out that they didn't changed the oil or oil filters, they never told me... So I was furious, and I bought my new KTM 1290 at a different KTM dealer. I never go back to my locale dealer again.

I bought 2 KTM's at this dealer, but because of this experience I bought my 3rd KTM some where else.. Funny thing, it was a KTM with a license plate from Austria. The original chain on my 2018 Triumph Tiger went 26K mi. (41K km). Replaced it because it was getting some tight joints (kinks) but was not stretched too much. Lubed it 6 or 7 times with yamaha onroad chain lube and made 3 or 4 small adjustments. Sprockets showed virtually no wear. Apparently the oem chain was very good quality because I have never come close to getting that much life out of any other chain on my jap bikes. Could not see a brand on the chain but would like to know who made it.

    There is no doubt that a 21 inch front wheel is the best option for serious off road riding but few adventure riders will do enough really serious stuff to justify giving up the considerable dynamic advantages of a 19 inch on tarmac. Please consider that every First World Record established by motorcycle riders has been on a machine with a 19 inch front wheel, yet todays showroom salesmen will try to tell you that a 21 inch wheel is essential for adventure riding. Here are just a few examples of 19 inch wheel record holding riders in date order. 1935 Florence Blenkiron and Theresa Wallach, first humans to cross the Sahara on any form of motorised transport (Panther). 1964 Steve McQueen, first Hollywood actor to win a sliver medal at the ISDT (Triumph). 1973 Ted Simon around the world and write a bestseller about it (Triumph). 1980 Elspeth Beard first woman around the world (BMW).1994 Dave Barr, first man around the world with 2 artificial legs (Sportster). 2004 Ewen McGregor and Charlie Boorman on "the long Way Around" (BMW). 2019 Henry Crew youngest person around the world (Ducati). A tiny sample but there are hundreds more unofficial records all achieved with 19 inch front wheels, I may even hold a couple myself such as the 7,500 mile TAT in 27 days.

Poor build quality, poor balance, excesessive heat from the engine, very poor wind protection. If I ever buy a Ktm again, it will only be an Exc for enduro riding. 😖

    I think you may have misunderstood the claim from Regina. They clearly state that the chain doesn’t require lubrication, not that it won’t need adjusting. By “maintenance free” they’re simply referring to the lubrication aspect of chain servicing. A chain that never stretches or wears is a physical impossibility. On top of that, even if the chain never wore, the sprockets do, which would necessitate chain tensioning…..

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes 7 днів тому

      That is what they are claiming now but the original marketing promises was no lubrication and tensioning btw BMW used the same claim and compared the maintenance to a shaft drive
